Green hydrogen offers a solution for the world’s urgent need for decarbonization. Using only water and renewable energy, it is the perfect replacement for grey hydrogen (natural gas and fossil-based fuels).
Moreover, green hydrogen combined with fuel cell and dual-fuel technologies can help decarbonize hard-to-abate sectors of the economy like long-haul and heavy-duty transportation, electricity generation, and more. A market of over 90 million tons of H2 per year which emits 900 million tons of CO2 per year (International Energy Agency, 2022).
Costa Rica has decarbonized its national electric grid. Starting in 2015, more than 98% of its electricity has been generated with renewable sources.
The country has agreed to decarbonize its economy including sectors that make up a significant part of the overall emissions in the country such as transportation. Thus, green hydrogen can take part in the solution
